Flew between EWR and LAX last week.
1) confirmed upgrades into business cabin on both segments (G and K fares) - likely due to non peak season and lighter than normal load via storm in the northeast. Was able to confirm LAX to EWR (red-eye) well prior to check-in. Almost everyone on the list cleared, and at least half of the cabin was via upgrades.
2) Seats: this is UA's strong feature. Some minor complaints about even row seats' foot wells, but getting upgraded was good enough. Not a lot of choices remaining after upgrade and being randomly assigned to a seat; although I did claim to a odd row seat on the outbound.
3) Amenities: new bedding (although I did not use both ways). Amenity kit was not loaded on EWR to LAX. Also missing headset on LAX-EWR - guess it was forgotten - appeared to be my seat only. Then it turned out sound was coming out from one side only. Maybe just me, but I have not had good luck with United IFE/headset, like trying to find a working plug at the airport.
4) Food and inflight service: really really bad. EWR to LAX seemed to be missing FAs, the service was extremely slow - slow enough the arrival food (cheese and hummus) came shortly after the conclusion of lunch. Received ice cream but it was more or less melted already...one set of FAs were serving desert for both aisles.
