It's quite common to have one flight cancel due to weather, yet the next flight to be okay.
Sounds like the next flight was full, so unfortunately no room for your group.
You aren't suggesting that United should have kicked off passengers on the second flight to make room for all displaced passengers of the canceled flight, are you?
Glad you managed to get to your cruise on time. Being pro-active like your group was, is sometimes better than to rely on airlines to make things right. Especially during bad weather.
