It doesn’t defeat the purpose at all. You earn the 5x at Adidas no matter what card you use. And obviously there is something wrong in the interface between your card and Adidas - which side you choose to blame is irrelevant; the obvious solution is to use a different card.

It’s not like getting 1x mile by using your AA card is some amazing deal - surely you have other cards that earn similar value.
