I did fly a few times with cardboard boxes on AF to and from CDG (but not to/from the US) and there was no issue with checking-in cardboard boxes. So unless there is a US-specific rule your friend should be able to check the box.

Tip : always carry adhesive tape in your cabin luggage in case there is an inspection of the box content so you can close the box again after the checks.
