Simply put, it’s very possible many individuals will find themselves in a position of clearing one status level (ie Gold), but realizing that they won’t have enough flying or purchasing for the rest of the year to earn the next level (ie Platinum). In such a scenario, without rollover, there is no incentive for additional incremental DL Amex spend or flying on DL. But if MQD rollover existed, there would be an incentive, as that earning would effectively be jump starting for the next earning year. So point being, there may be a financial incentive to DL to allow MQD rollover and incentivize that additional spend..

And obviously, if MQD rollover did exist, that might change the strategies we employ.
I suspect the counter-argument is just as strong. With rollover, a person might reach their target status earlier in the year, so they become a free agent for the remainder of the year, trying different airlines (or credit cards). Whereas without rollover, they'd need to stick with DL all year to reach their target, or they may even need to purchase additional MQD at the end of the year (if DL offers that)
