Any Secret Rules Against Checking a Cardboard Box as Luggage?

I have a friend who is flying back to the US from Europe on Air France/KLM.

He has books that he wants to take back with him, and plans on using a (sturdy) cardboard box.

Is there any secret (or published) rule against checking cardboard boxes as luggage, or is he OK so long as he is within the weight and size limit?
