A new situation, well new in recent memory, and this thread may not be the place for it. I am currently driving through Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Slovenia. I am staying in a combination of hotels and apartments. I am getting mixed messages regarding government registration. In Sarajevo, a hotel, did not copy my passport - just a quick glance. In Mostar, an apartment, the manager did not need a copy of my passport, but just my full name, passport #, and expiration date. Moving into Croatia, in Sibenik, the apartment manager had the same requirement, but in Zadar tonight, the apartment manager didn't mention it. I don't know where I'll be tomorrow night, but Sunday night, I'll be in Ljubljana. That apartment manager advised that she needed a copy of my passport and a second form of ID per the government. That is the only situation that I prepared for when I was researching car rentals and came across a requirement that if I was going to be in Slovenia for more than 3 days, I needed to register with the government.
I can't remember the last time a hotel, other than the property in Venice (mentioned in the previous post), needed a copy of my passport. I recall government registration being a requirement when visiting some of the Eastern Bloc countries years ago - like in the 1990s. And Croatia and Slovenia are both EU countries and I am in those countries legally.
Is government registration, beyond border control, becoming a new thing in parts of Europe?
