I will rent a car from Hertz next week, and expect to travel within MA and from MA to NH and back to Boston.

1. I guess i can "close" the transponder on the rental car and it won't be read...
2. How about what I should be doing with the MA EZ pass transponder that I DO have... in terms of using it on the rental, any advice for me?

Thanks in advance.
The main things are:
  1. Make sure the car's transponder box is fully closed
  2. Add the vehicle on ezdrivema.com. You'll need the plate/state and year/make/model. Yes, you will be able to do this even though Hertz also has the plate registered (unlike the scammy NY system that doesn't allow overriding the rental company's plate $$$ Platepass registration). When you select the relationship as "rental" it will have fields for start/end date. Do this before leaving the Hertz lot, as you will likely hit tolls right away and it's not possible to set a start time in the past.
Other than that, just have your transponder in a position to be read -- it's worked for me loose on the dash, held to the windshield, or in a suction cup holder (most convenient, yet easiest to forget!). But if you did #2 above, even if it doesn't read my experience is that the tolls properly charged to my own account via the plate (including when I forgot the transponder altogether). Caveat: I only used it in MA, so can't guarantee that a plate read in another state will 100% map to the override account; that depends how the EZpass interchange system is managed/cached. Safest to make sure your transponder is on the windshield to read.

Tolls take a few days to show up in your account, that you can again see at ezdrivema.com
