There's no need to add a rental to one's NY E-Z Pass account, and it might not be possible in any event. But as long as your transponder is correctly "read" while in a rental car, you'll get the NY E-Z Pass rates. I've never had an issue with my transponder being read in a rental car, but I understand that some others have.
