HI: Maputo, Mozambique
Booked this for a last minute business trip to Maputo. No pictures on the website so I was a bit hesitant but it was a good rate of $98/108 per night including 17% tax and breakfast for 7 nights and I figured HI would be reliable.
What a nice HI this is.
Newly built a couple of years ago in a charming spanish villa style, half the rooms face the sea. The rooms are a tad small but have a large sliding door between bathroom and bed area allowing you to "open up" the wall between the two areas which gives a sense of more space. View to Baia de Maputo was very nice. Hotel offers a pillow "menu".
Hotel fronts a private grassed area and pool with steps down to the beach (which was too dirty to swim at). The beach is just ok for walking. Some resort style shops and a very nice bar/restaurant area where you can sit outside facing the pool.
Internet access is free - dial up to an internal hotel server and about 19kbps so quite slow and not so reliable in peak evening hours but OK for Mozambique.
Hotel is located away from downtown and about 5 mins in a taxi ($5) from the upmarket Polana area of Maputo, it is not so convenient for meetings. However, many of the people we needed to meet came to the hotel to meet us which was handy - it seems a popular place for a drink or meal in town.
Breakfast buffet (and al a carte omlete) was excellent - the tropical fruit very good. The restaurant was fine and service good. The hotel has its own vegetable garden and I had no food trouble with any salads which was great.
Located next door is Sagres, a popular local seafood place (famous for prawns but they were always overcooked wherever we had them in Mozambique). Costa del sol and a couple of imported good supermarkets are 5 mins drive north of the hotel along the coast road. There are a few souvenier sellers on the road near Sagres.
Airport shuttle is free, confirm with an email to the hotel ahead of time, private taxis wait outside the hotel from early morning to evening. Hotel is part of the Southern Sun chain.
This was a very good hotel for a business stay and had a nice resort, holiday atmosphere. Don't hesitate to book if you will be in Moz. it's the only Priority Club location in the country. Points posted after a week or so (including promos).
They should put some pictures on the 6C website...it really is a beautiful hotel.
