I hold the CIBC VIP. I am aware the terms state 1 SQS/1000 SQM per $5000 net purchases.
I have so far spent $27,000 on the card, accruing just over 40,000 aeroplan points (excluding bonuses)
I have received 6 SQS through card use. If it were 1 SQS per 5k, I should have received only 5 SQS so far, 6 at 30k spend. When I got the card the SQS that were awarded each month seemed to line up with 1 per 5000 points, not dollars.
So am I missing 2 SQS or do I have 1 extra? Either way the count seems to be off.
Does Aeroplan actually know how much we spend on the card or is it based on the mileage CIBC sends to them?
It's CIBC that sends it. I had all sorts of fun with this a couple years back:

My recommendation is assume the benefit is mostly reliable, but don't waste your time (or CIBC / Aeroplan's apparently) in escalating discrepancies. If you're using it for status, then build in a buffer of 2000 SQM, especially if it's your December statement.
FWIW, I've never had them claw back any boost SQM/SQS.
