In addition to what I noted above in Post #2, will you be going back to STL or ATL to visit this family at any point in the booking window (sometime through next summer?) If so, what you could do is book a very, very extended round-trip with the companion cert.

I.e: book BWI-STL on AA on December 12th and then STL-ATL flight on DL or AA or whomever for December 22nd. Then book ATL-BWI-ATL with the companion cert departing on Jan 1 and returning to ATL whenever you'd visit again for a week or weekend and then book a one-way return for ATL-BWI on whomever when you'd return to BWI from the second week/weekend trip.
