One way they could have done this was to still allow unlimited visits, but limit the number of visits during high capacity times. For instance, if you open the app and it shows the club as reaching a certain level of crowding, you have to use one of your 6 or 10 visits. For times that are not busy, your visits are unlimited.
A friend of mine who's spouse works at Amex in a position where they would know such things said Amex was having an issue with expenses, i.e. per-swipe fees being paid to Delta, which leads to me believe Amex was at least on board with this change, if not the ones pushing for it
one of the many reasons I recommend that folks consider complaining to Amex and not DL
