I do not think Amex and DL want to push customers back toward the traditional memberships. I suspect an optional "unlimited club" pass is in the works for a substantially higher annual fee--an add-on that could be increased much easier than the basic card fee as annual demand/capacity constraints warrant. Even if customers can't/won't spend $75K to get unlimited access, it seems to be in DL and Amex's best interests to keep customers engaged with the card products vs. charging a membership to a Chase Visa.
My intention, if I stay with Delta primarily, will be to buy a membership. The opportunity cost is too much to charge to the Amex Platinum.
