Now that you have cancelled, call or use the live chat asap. Tell them why you had to cancel and that you need the points back straight away to rebook. Ask them to process the refund whilst you are on the call, they should be able to do that. Sounds like a bit of a mess...good luck!
I just got off the phone with a CSR who told me that the refund process is automated and that he is unable to do anything about getting my points back straight away in my account. He said it is all handled by the finance team which may take anywhere between 7-28 days. When I inquired if I can speak to someone in the finance team he told me that they do not accept calls in that department. This is crazy. I have cancelled award tickets on Aeroplan and LifeMiles and they both redeposit my points within an hour!
