I believe that you can still receive elite night credits when earning miles.

But choosing miles is a terrible value destroyer. 1-2 miles per USD vs 10 points per USD. Maybe a 60% value destruction AND you give up elite status bonuses, promo bonuses, etc.

You're probably better off still earning Marriott points and trying to manufacture AA Loyalty Points a different way. Or just go fully into the AAHotels free agency world to earn far more LPs from your hotel stays - you can sometimes still receive elite benefits (although no elite night credit)...

Don't forget that the AA shopping portal offers Marriott. Book when the rate is better than the standard 1 mile per USD.
