As you have said if you do not take the first flight your return will automatically be cancelled.

you cannot notify BA of you intent to skip the flight. You can inform BA that you would like to modify your booking and remove the first flight.

BA will then reprice your ticket as a one way, add on whatever change fees apply and provide you with the cost of making that change.
