There are two ways to apply a MileagePlus upgrade award. That’s one of them, which allows you to upgrade and/or waitlist during booking. However, after you have a reservation:

1. On the United.com website, select “Manage Trip” for the reservation in question on the My Trips tab to get to the itinerary screen.
2. Click the Upgrade Cabin button at the top of the reservation
3. It will give you a choice of upgrading with Money, Miles, or (if you have any) PlusPoints. Select Miles.
4. It will show you your options, including whether they will clear immediately or if you’d waitlist.

I always use this path to upgrade — I never try to upgrade during the purchase process. You can absolutely upgrade both the outbound and return trips.
