Your pragmatic solution is probably the most sensible. You can also cancel your points booking. As for the tape recording, I think you would have access to it via a 'freedom of information' request as it contains information of a personal nature held by BA. If so, I think they would be compelled to release it to you if requested. I'm not sure whether any South African rules or legislation would get in the way of that. I think you would be on solid ground and I think you'd have a high chance of recovering the money AA routing does make more sense if you can put up with economy eek.
