What is the known I/IN mileage requirement from California to Taipei on UA or BR, would you be able to share?

If you only spent 88K on UA metal to Asia, probably not a bad rate. 100K seems to be the minimal on UA metal. These days BR award business seats are hard to find. However, if you see BR award seats are released on United.com, most likely near departure date, you can exchange or cancel your current award ticket for the BR flight. Just note that phantom inventory is not uncommon.

For partner flight booking, if you go to partner's website and see "waitlisted", it is never a good sign. UA can only confirm their own metal. I have seen some Flyertalk postings that UA called partners to release seats. Not sure if every agent will do so.
