Yeah it's doable and I agree staying in Macau might be better, depends how much stuff you have because if you're going straight to the airport then you'll have to take everything with you, or bring it to HKG and store it first.

I would think travelling on the 1st will be a bit less busy but the 2nd afternoon might be more busy as more HKers will be returning for school/work.
