The next thing I will do is to ask them to waive the cancelation fee within 30 days if I am just booking a new room using FNC and cancel the points booking (basically a rebooking), so I can access the availability within 30 days, which could make a material difference. I don't see why this is going to hurt their bottom line at all so hopefully they would be fine with that?
I don't think it hurts to ask; I just wouldn't go rouge and book something and expect they'll waive the fee. I'm in a similar situation except re new availability and soon to be butting up against the 30 day cancellation window. I think you also have to do the math and see if it makes sense. With the 5th nt free, the rate comes down to 120k/nt. In my case, if I don't use a FNC here, I will use it at WA Los Cabos Pedregal, which is 120k/nt and we don't typically do 5 nights there, so I'd either burn a cert or pts, equally.
