You might try asking to be transferred to web support. They have pushed things thru for me when the regular reservation agent balked.
Key is to say you have an itinerary on United.com that errors out when you try to purchase and ask to get to web support.
Not saying it is 100% to work, but worth a try if you want to keep at it.
