Thanks for all the info and suggestions guys. It really helped me to make the decision. Hopefully this will be a useful thread for someone else who might have similar questions.
Can I suggest the take outs for anybody considering using the cheap looking fairs to Aus originating in KUL;
1. You are going to fly a very old style business cradle at likely an unearthly hour on the MNL - KUL leg.
2. You will get a day flight AUS to MNL. The cabin is likely to be full because of the upgrade bid policy.
3. Connecting in MNL is likely to involve a long wait with a very poor lounge offering.
4. The hard product on board is OK..... but the food offer is pretty average at best.
5. If heading to MEL you are in danger of arriving at a very early hour!
BUT
1. If you are routing through KUL anyway it is not a bad option
Especially If
2. You can take advantage of a stopover in PI.
In our case 1 & 2 work excedingly well for us, as we have family in Manila and Ilocos - as well as Aus..
Buying anything from any Philippines airline - Caveat Emptor! I wouldn't be surprised to hear that the eventual cancellation cost is more than £200. I cancelled a flight in January that had no cancellation fee but still ended up over £100 short! And that after waiting several weeks for the refund.
