Overall, I had a good experience flying SAS as a Star Gold on a cheapo coach fare. My transatlantic flight back to JFK was 2 hours late (due to late arriving aircraft), but otherwise the service was competitive with the other "full service" transatlantic airlines. In-flight free beverages (other than water, tea and coffee) are oddly limited to ONE non-alcoholic drink -- served well before the actual meal -- but the food is fine for what it is. I liked the A3330s with a party of 2, as the seating confirguration is 2-4-2. Remember than you CAN check in something like 30 hours before departure and snag the 2-sides if you like. In-flight entertainment system adequate but not great.
I was also surprised to earn UA mileage with my cheapo tickets. Half mileage, which isn't bad these days for cheapo tickets. It felt like "free money."
SAS lounge at EWR is small, but (marginally) adequate. Lufthansa lounge next door has better food, but hard to get into -- as it is extremely small. Apparently, it will soon close for a major expansion.
At Oslo, you have to go through security and passport control to access the SAS Lounge on an int'l connection. Don't be fooled by the option for "in-transit screening" -- there's still no access to the lounge. The lounge is aesthetically pleasing but has very limited food options. Worth the modest hassle of passport control, as you'll have to go through security either way.
At Copenhagen, you can avoid both passport control and a security screening on an int'l connection -- but you will have to do the passport control (but not security) to access the SAS Lounge there. The line at passport control ebbs and flows with the flight schedule, but it generally didn't seem too bad. The SAS Lounge at Copenhagen is large and beautiful but, again, the food options are meager. If you have a Priority Pass card, the Eventyr lounge has far superior food, and better drink -- and seemed less crowded. Slightly less aesthetically pleasing, but you don't have to do any security or passport control to use it on an int'l connection.
