I understand your frustration and share it. The only reason I know about this is because the sign at Newark said 8kg+2kg and I was tested on this in Porto. I then recently saw the pdf when you are booking where it specifies this, although the booking e-mail, website and even the check-in e-mail say 10kg+2kg. Once I get enough posts under my belt, I'll link the pdf so you can verify this. They really need to train all staff and set a specific weight limit.

As for what can be done, I don't think we can do anything except make sure we let other people know as to reduce the chance of them ripping people off, these posts saved me at least 125 Euro! Imagine paying extra to check a bag with comfort or higher and then getting busted for 125 Euro at the gate when you could have put things in your checked bag. My only trick is to have things in your pockets such as a battery bank, liquids, anything heavy, though from other posts earlier they may be getting wise to this too.

I can deal with a lot of issues, delays, bad food, however nothing gets me upset/annoyed than this stupid carry-on dance. I have a within limit bag that I fly United with and they never hassle me. Now don't get me wrong, the people taking huge size bags that are vastly oversized are the ones that should be penalized because it's rude to fellow passengers.
