For travel on IB metal, you should find that redeeming BA Avios will result in the exact same surcharges as redeeming IB Avios. So maybe consider transferring your IB Avios to BAEC, and redeeming through BA? I expect that in the event of problems, it will be easier to deal with BA rather than IB.
