That's different. AA is very good about protecting paid upgrades in case of irrops. Once it has cleared they treat it as a paid business class ticket.
But in this case there was an upgrade that never should have gone through, according to the terms. The upgrade was (correctly) revoked and the instrument was returned. Forcing C space in order to allow OP to use the returned instrument was above and beyond.
