Do I need to have any documents / letter from the friend? Does it matter if they're not Chinese (foreign exchange student)?
Or is it just best I get myself a hotel in Shanghai and avoid potential problems? Thanks
You just need to provide your host's address on the entry form, but if you go this route, your friend will need to facilitate PSB registration for you within 24 hours. The process ranges from easy (e.g. can be done electronically so no police station visit required) to near impossible (e.g. friend doesn't have a valid current lease agreement).

Getting a hotel for the first night (a single night is all you need to get in the system) would spare you of any possible hassles, but you might want to msg your friend first to gague his/her specific situation.
