I have to agree - in my experience unless a re-ticketing is forced the original issue date is the baseline for validity of any redating and BA systems do enforce the limit. So to circumvent it they would have to cancel and re-issue a new ticket.
Im talking about the op doing a voluntary change now to dates within his current validity ie before December. Then his ticket validity will be 1 year from whatever the reissue date is (ie September) and he will then be able to do a further voluntary change to the date he wants in May. However this will mean two separate voluntary changes paying fare/tax and change fee each time.
Since you dont seem to believe me I suggest the OP calls and queries this himself.
