United clearly isn't blocking the ANA "paid for" seats during booking - just did a dummy booking for next month whilst not logged in (ie, no status playing a part) and I still see most of the plane available, but obviously ANA then rejects the request for that seat when UA sends it over. I was on a codeshare, whilst explain why I didn't see the option to purchase those seats when on the ANA website.
It seems that United shows as blocked only the seats available from ANA for free (i.e., mostly middles), and shows as available seats that are blocked except for purchase on ANA.
