Well to give an update... No I could not find the flights using the change button online, if I had to guess it is because I also wanted to change from PE to J. Yes calling in worked, but it took 3 agents until I found one who could help me. Doing the change saved $70 USD (change fee vs cancel fee).
The agent confirmed the changes for me, but had to send a payment link for the change fee and mentioned there is a possibility of losing my flight (I didn't catch the specifics, but that made me anxious). About an hour later I got the email to pay the change fee. After that, I could see my booking changed and kept the same reference number, but the ticket was not yet issued. After about 2 hours of waiting I called just to make sure things are OK and still processing and they were. About an hour later got the email to pay for the new taxes and fees. A minute after paying, I got the email confirming it is ticketed.

Ha, maybe things are a little more open from Europe. AMS-HKG-BKK flights within the next 2 weeks. I saw availability on a different day too.
