Changing at Lax or SFO?

I’m going to be flying BA from LHR to the US on a Saturday in the reasonably near future and then transferring to a flight to KOA. If I go through LAX, I’d leave Heathrow at 950, arrive at 1305, and then have the option of booking Delta at 1550 or UA at 1629. If I go through SFO, I’d leave Heathrow at 1110, arrive SFO at 1415, and then transfer to United at 1750. The flights to Kona all take ~5:15. My initial reaction is LAX is a little better (so long as one doesn’t want the extra hour sleep on London). If so, is the flight at 1550 too risky? One virtue of SFO is that if we get in late, my sister lives there and I have connections at the Intercontinental. Any advice would be appreciated!
