As long as the renewal application was made before the original expiration date, your son will continue to receive all NEXUS benefits for up to five years pending the approval of the renewal application.

From the Canada Border Services Agency website:

Existing members who renew their membership prior to the expiry date will have their benefits extended for up to five years to allow for the scheduling and completion of interviews, as required (if they have not been auto-renewed).

And the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website:
