So I got a person this morning after only a 15 minute wait. She indicated that within 7 days there’s no guarantee of an RU being honoured. That sort of makes sense and sort of doesn’t: why not process my RU in the queue if you’re going to accept some One Ups.
Given how business travel can be rather last minute none of this makes entire sense. Had I confirmed an upgrade and then changed my flight I wouldn’t have expect to be able to recycle the RU.
That is absolute bollocks and makes a mockery or any sort of Tier status loyalty, even their own website states -
"To improve your chances of having your Upgrade confirmed, it's best to request a Recognition Upgrade at the time you book or at least seven days before your flight. This will allow us to assess your request prior to processing any OneUp Upgrades."
and they even have a FAQ question on it -
"Could I miss out on my Recognition Upgrade to someone making a strong OneUp upgrade offer?"

If you request your Recognition Upgrade only a few days out from your flight we may already have evaluated and awarded OneUp upgrades, which could lead to you missing out. We recommend requesting your Recognition Upgrade when you book, or as early as possible afterwards.
