AA seems to want to model its operation off of Spirit. It seems like MCE is a nuisance to them. I'm embarrassed to bring guests into many AA clubs (including JFK and PHX), line or no.
AA's lack of meaningful MCE is a big reason I flew Delta a lot from 2017 until last fall. I did keep BA Silver status to get me AA MCE at ticketing at Flagship lounges while I was still frequently commuting to Chicago (often DL via DTW one way and AA the other), but I let that lapse this past January.
What AA does have, however, are sometimes silly cheap redemption rates on domestic F awards. It's possible to fly cross country such as RDU-SAN for 50k RT in F if you are flexible with days. Given that DL is often $450 RT for Y for those types of routes, it's sometimes not that difficult of a decision.
