As for the asterisk fare, according to the website, fares with asterisks still earned miles when I booked. Obviously that's changed, and removing the asterisks removed any ambiguity. Like I said, I should have taken screenshots. The additional miles would've been nice for a trip to the EU next year.

I don’t fly enough for status to make any difference. Being gold here means you're at the bottom of the upgrade list with a snowball's chance in late spring of getting one. Usually just buy F/J to save my knees and back.
