There is no protection for the connection even if they check you in for both flights i.e. no responsibility to reroute you but usual delay compensation applies, i.e. if the inbound from USA is delayed >3 hours it will mean 600e of compensation. But your own private travel insurance might cover the connection (the same way you are covered if you miss a flight because of a train strike for instance), I don't know.
In the past Finnair has very good track record of rearranging connections on separate tickets if both flights are AY. Not guaranteed but I've always had success and last year even CS confirmed they'd reroute me in case of misconnection between separate AY tickets.
