i switched on several occasions under similar circumstances without asking (incl long haul CX but never on NH) - on a couple occasions FA asked and then complimented me on sending spouse to better cabin..
why ask and put FA in awkward situation? plead ignorance and at the very worst they ll swap you back but you'll still score points with spouse for trying
