JR West has announced that Kanazawa-Tsuruga extension of Hokuriku Shinkansen will start service on March 16, 2024.

Currently Limited Express Thunderbird runs direct service between Osaka-Kanazawa every 40 min-1 hr. Limited Express Shirasagi runs direct service between Nagoya-Kanazawa every hour. Starting March 16, 2024 travel of Osaka/Nagoya-Kanazawa will require transfer between limited express train and Shinkansen train at Tsuruga, no more direct service. Travel time between Osaka-Kanazawa will be 22 min. faster, and Nagoya-Kanazawa will be 16 min. faster. Likely the fare will increase because of Shinkansen. I do not think this is much of improvement. Also, from March 16, 2024 current Tsuruga-Kanazawa portion of JR West Hokuriku Line will no longer be operated by JR West, likely cannot use JR Pass.
