Not sure if this is part of your question, but you do still need to "upgrade" to comfort plus. It's possible that comfort seats are being sold but you are not able to select them when you book into main, and have to wait to get upgraded before DoD or it goes to the airport upgrade list. Obviously this happens a lot more often for tickets purchased closer to travel dates.
While DL doesn't seem to typically hold back seats in C+ from comp upgrades (which pull from SU upgrade bucket), it's a possibility and there seem to have been a few reports of it happening. I think the main thing to realize is that the flights have to actually ticket before the C+ upgrades will be processed (at which point you will show as being in SU class). One can't simply select open C+ seats at checkout time (prior to purchase) like you can with other carriers with equivalent seating.
