Right, I was thinking of AA flights (hence my edit at the end, which in retrospect was a bit confusing)
Assuming that the AA metal LHR-PHX flight works (ie, is a legal connection with a reasonable wait time in LHR) I think that the best thing to do would be to ask them to put you on that flight due to the schedule change. Make it very clear that you are asking to be booked on the AA flight, not the BA one.
