These folks may well think they are smarter than you and me...
In any event, these tickets are fraudulent. That these folks might be victims, however sad, is not the airline's business. Ignorance is usually not a defence. Especially against a third party.
If they cooperate with the airline and help catch the crooks, they might have a fighting chance of getting their money back.
Agreed, I didn't advocate for "if they're ignorant then let them off".
My point is that the hardest part is detecting them, whether the flyer is ignorant or fully aware is immaterial. Clearly for AP to have gone to the extreme lengths they have over the past few months, they are having difficulties in detecting the cases.
