I regularly book starting from the night before for overseas trips where I’ll be at the hotel post midnight (i.e., pre 8am the day after the booking). I tend to do a couple of things in conjunction, book transit from the airport with the hotel and thus communicate with them directly about it. Or do online checking the night before and do a quick chat exchange with them late evening confirming that I’ll be arriving at whatever time I estimate my arrival. I feel this works well versus doing an exchange 48hrs prior which might be lost in the shuffle.
It's a good idea to use the chat function with the hotel (unless you are in transit without internet access).
