This is a hotel to go to with a car if you want to go off property. I stayed 3 nights right after it opened, and stayed in Tulum-both in the town and on the beach. Taxis are extremely high and many make it a point to rip off tourists. So you can come use this as a wonderful place to relax, which its great at - but there can be a huge sagassum problem. And its huge- - no hotel along the Riviera can keep up with it. It stinks, and its no fun to go swim in as I tried. That being said, the pools are amazing. But you are truly isolated here. I thought the restaurants were very good, and the breakfast amazing. I know the hotel can arrange tours, but they are expensive. If you want to go to Tulum, GO EARLY! There is one road with one lane and it gets bumpy, and it backs up!! There are a lot of cool things to do in the area. Personally, I would come and relax here and then go stay in Tulum or Akumal or Playa del Carmen to go to Coba, Chichen Itza, cenotes, snorkel with turtles, etc. There are a couple of eco parks that would be great for families with kids - Xcaret, etc. You could even take a ferry over to Conzumel for great snorkeling!
