We are flying out that evening, and the hotel was nice enough to give us a 4 pm check-out, AND vouchers for breakfast when we arrive (this is a Marriott brand, we are only Gold so not entitled to breakfast, so this was a very nice gesture) - I did say it was my husband's birthday (it is) so I'm sure that's part of the reason.
What I'm curious about is that they have a stupid "destination fee" which includes an f&b credit, so not sure how that will tie in with the free breakfast. I didn't want to ask (look a gift horse in the mouth), but I'll see what evolves. This will be in 2 weeks so I'll report back how the "prepaid" early check in will work, and which hotel it was at, good or bad.
I know there are also dayuse hotel options but this actually worked out better since we are using Marriott points, and most of them didn't have the range of hours we needed.
If it's 8am check-in it makes perfect sense that you book for the night before and then tell the hotel about it. Make sure you have EVERYTHING in writing (seemed like you already have) - also call/write them again 48h before to remind them of your situation. If they do night audit at 1am and you haven't shown up they might mark you as no show.
