Have you checked if you have any insurance included with the credit card you may have used to buy the ticket?
Some travel insurance for lost/delayed luggage may be included to give you additional $ for essential items.

As for the guidance, I think irishguy28 has said it all. I might only advise you not only to keep the receipts but also to take a picture of them asap: some receipt ink does fade relatively quickly.
