So far, I have never had a problem with it. You know what they say about assuming... So I imagine there is probably a property somewhere that won't hold bags, has very limited capacity do so, or wants to charge fees for it. I have actually experienced a hotel that wanted to charge a fee for holding bags after checkout (non Marriott). I can sort of understand that though think it is shortsighted. If I ever encountered a hotel that wanted to charge a fee for holding bags before check-in, that would be a deal breaker.
