I understand it's part of the risk when booking a error fare, but this was not an obvious error fare. A price of around €1000 is on the lower side for a return, but not overly obvious an error. The fact you received an email 14 days after booking, makes their point even less fruitful. As I work in legal/travel, but not in Italy/Oman, I will check with my colleagues to see if they (also) see a valid point for not accepting Oman Air its way of 'resolving this matter' from a legal perspective.
On Oman Air's website it was clearly stated that this was a sale fare. So given biz flights on other airlines have been this sort of price before it is quite reasonable to take them at their word on their website that this was the sale price and go ahead and book onward travel, hotels etc......
I guess they are not offering to pay for those that people will be put of pocket for.
