With the recent clampdowns of family sharing in Aeroplan as well as removal of partner availability online, it became clear that the abuse of family sharing by bad actors have impacted us all in a negative way.
As a frequent flyer and AP collector, as community, we are all for fighting abuse of the system and we can also help brainstorm ideas how AP can combat abuse of AP without negatively impacting all of us.
To start, here are some ideas
- Add cooldown period after family member is added to the pool before that family member can use points from pool (30 days for instance)
- Add miles requirements before family member can be added to any pool (say 1000 miles self generated) with exemption for minors, over 65+, or requirement on the age of the account
- Add cooldown for cancelled flex points to be added to account (48 hours)
- AP to run awareness campaign about buying tickets from individuals will result in cancelled tickets
I see merits to the first two points and I think most of us regular users would welcome these changes if it meant that partner rewards were made available again.
Point 3 may or may not help. Point 4 would be difficult to do in the long term
